Dexter J. Singleton
Executive Artistic Director

Mr. Singleton is a working director, actor, and playwright whose career began with the world renowned Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit as an ensemble member.

In 2001, Dexter and Liz Hinz founded Collective Consciousness Theatre (CCT), a New Haven based multicultural theatre company dedicated to creating and producing new American works that inspire social change. To date, CCT has performed for more than 75,000 youth and adults across the U.S. and abroad, touring to Holland and Norway. The company has brought several new plays and premieres to audiences including Little Brother, I’m Just a Superhero, Give Us Free, Stories of a New America, Struggle for Freedom, No Lie: A Hip Hop Bus Trip, Shakespeare: The Remix, and many others.

Dexter has engaged many organizations and schools across the country with original social justice workshops and programming. His recent directing credits include, Flint, Among the Western Dinka, Black Book, The Mountaintop, This Is Modern Art, She Kills Monsters, Caroline or Change, and Topdog/Underdog. His work has been seen at TheatreSquared, University of Michigan, Flea Theatre (NYC), Long Wharf Theatre, Hartford Stage, Passage Theatre and others. Serving as Executive Artistic Director of Collective Consciousness Theatre, he is also the Chair of Theatre at Regional Center for the Arts in Trumbull, CT. and an Adjunct Professor at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, CT. He sits on the national board of TYA/USA, the nation’s leading advocate for the field of Theatre for Young Audiences.

He is from Detroit and a recipient of the 2014 National Artist Teacher Fellowship.

Jenny Nelson, MA

Jenny hails from Arizona where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Master’s degree in Theatre from the University of Arizona as well as a second Master’s degree in Education from Fairfield University. Jenny also has extensive classical training in both voice and piano and has been a professional singer/songwriter for over 20 years. Jenny is an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Theatre Education at City College of New York as well as a director and instructor at the Regional Center for the Arts, a magnet arts high school. In the summer, Jenny is the Program Director of the Shubert Theatre and Arts Camp. Past director credits include: Sunset Baby, Milk Like Sugar, Farewell WelcomeWe Are Proud To Present…, Gidion’s Knot, MedeaMerry Wives of Windsor, and Skin of Our Teeth. Dramaturgical credits include: Hamlet, Carousel, Henry the IV Part I and II and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Jenny is also a nominee of the Tony Teacher’s Award.
